Wait. A “pink” moon? Looks orange to me!
Yes, well, the April full moon rising on Saturday, April 19, 2022 can be called a “pink moon,” but don’t expect it to actually be. appear pink.
Unless there are some strange happenings in the atmosphere, your vision of Saturday’s fabulous moonrise will feature – if the sky is clear – a muted orange orb appearing on the eastern horizon.
Same as always… except, admit it, you rarely see the monthly moonrise, do you?
Every month there are 20 magic minutes not to be missed
You have to be in the right place at the right time to see our natural satellite in space appear on the eastern horizon as dusk falls around you. You can watch it draped in orange hues and, as it gently rises into the dark blue sky, subtly changes to yellow and visibly brightens as it rises.
Here is exactly when, where and how to observe the rise of the “pink moon”, the first full moon of spring 2022:
When is the ‘Pink Moon?’
The Moon will be 100% illuminated at 6:57 p.m. UTC on Saturday, April 19, 2022. However, the time to see when the Moon rises differs depending on where you are on the planet.
You don’t want to know when the Moon is exactly full. It’s irrelevant. What you need to know is exactly what time the moonrise will occur on the day of the full moon – and sometimes the day before or the day after – depending on what closely follows or precedes sunset.
This way you can watch the moonrise at dusk. This is the only time of the month when you can watch the orange orb glow in its surroundings rather than at night. What a view!
When exactly to see the “pink moon” rise
You can check the exact moonrise times where you are, but here’s an example of the best time to see the “pink moon” from three cities around the world:
- London: 7:47 p.m. BST on Saturday 19 April 2022 (sunset is 7:57 p.m. BST)
- New York: 7:44 p.m. EDT Saturday, April 19, 2022 (sunset is 7:36 p.m. EDT)
- Los Angeles: 7:41 p.m. PDT Saturday, April 19, 2022 (sunset is 7:24 p.m. PDT)

Why is the April full moon called the “pink moon”?
It’s cherry blossom, right? In fact, it’s because of the spring appearance of wild ground phlox, although since the full moons are (rather inexplicably) tied to the names used by various Native American tribes, it’s all very North American-centric.
The April Full Moon is also known as the Sprout Moon, Waxing Moon, Pisces Moon, and Hare Moon.
In the UK, the April full moon is called Egg Moon.
What does the “Pink Moon” have to do with Easter?
More religious holidays than you might think are linked to the Moon. The exact dates of Passover and Easter each year are two. Passover begins the evening before the first full moon after the equinox (March 20, 2022) and Easter occurs on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the equinox.
When is the next full moon?
The next full moon is the full “Flower Moon”, which will take place on Monday, May 16, 2022. It will also be a “Blood Moon” total lunar eclipse. On Sunday. From May 15 to Monday May 16, 2022, the full “Flower Moon” will take on a spectacular reddish color for 84 minutes. And it will be seen best in North and South America!
I wish you clear skies and big eyes.
