USWNT vs. Mexico Score: Christy Mewis scores late winner as La Tri is disqualified from the World Cup

The United States women’s national team defeated Mexico 1-0 in Monterey, Mexico on Monday evening. It was the final match of the group stage at the CONCACAF W Championship because Christie Meuis recorded a game-winner in the 89th minute of the game.

The Americans wasted most of the night despite having 15 shots and six frames on the winning goal shortly after the hosts went down to 10 players thanks to a red card from Lisbeth Oval. His crushing on Rose Lovell was an easy call for a low tackle official and gave the Americans a one-player advantage that they were far from their best at night.

The win puts USWNT at the top of Group A as they enter the semifinals with a perfect 3-0-0 record. The top two teams from each group advanced to the 2023 Women’s World Cup and USWNT, Canada, Costa Rica and Jamaica each claimed their place in the global tournament to be held in Australia and New Zealand next summer.

USWNT’s focus now shifts to the knockout round. Back-to-back tournament winners and eight-time champions, there is still a lot to risk. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2024 W Gold Cup. The team had previously faced Costa Rica during the Olympic qualifiers in February 2020 and defeated Las Ticas 6-0. If the USWNT advance to the final and lose, they will have to compete in a playoff against the winner of the third place game to secure a place in the final Olympics.
