Ukraine war latest: Putin used hypersonic missile ‘to distract from stalled invasion’, UK says

Shelling in kyiv neighborhood destroys shopping mall, kills at least six

Moscow’s claim that it fired hypersonic missiles into western Ukraine is “probably intended to harm” Russian forces’ lack of progress on the ground, the British defense attache said.

AVM Mick Smeath said: “The Ministry of Defense Defense Intelligence notes that Russia has claimed to have fired a number of ‘hypersonic’ missiles against targets in western Ukraine.

“If that’s true, it was probably the Kinzhals; an air-launched ballistic missile system based on the Iskander ballistic missile which itself has already been used extensively by Russian forces in their attack on Ukraine.

“Russian claims to have used developmental Kinzhal are most likely intended to distract from a lack of progress in Russia’s ground campaign.

“Kinzhal’s deployment is highly unlikely to materially affect the outcome of the Russian campaign in Ukraine.”

It comes as the Kremlin reportedly warned the US ambassador that Moscow is about to sever ties between the nations.

The warning issued to US Ambassador John Sullivan on Monday morning as Russia continues its assault on Ukraine despite tough US sanctions, Reuters reports.

Alexei Navalny’s allies claim Vladimir Putin owns £500m superyacht docked in Italy

A video shared online by allies of Alexi Navalny has claimed a $700m (£500m) superyacht moored off the west coast of Italy belongs to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The six-deck Scheherezade has a spa, beauty salon, gym and two helipads. It also houses a swimming pool equipped with a retractable cover that turns into a dance floor, according to reports. But it lacks a listed owner – who landed the vessel under the control of Italian authorities in Marina di Carrara, amid a recent roundup of luxury yachts owned by oligarchs.

March 8, The New York Times spoke to the captain of the ship – a British man named Guy Bennett-Pearce. He denied that Putin ever owned or set foot on the Scheherezade. ” I never saw it. I’ve never met him,” he told the newspaper.

Days later Mr Bennett-Pearce said he had had ‘no choice’ but to reveal the owner’s identity to Italian police, adding: ‘I have no doubts in my mind that this will clear the ship of all negative rumors and speculation.

However, in a sensational video shared today on Navalny’s YouTube channel, presenters Georgy Alburov and Maria Pevchikh claimed to have revealed that half of the ship’s crew – apart from Mr Bennett-Pearce – were in the Federal Service of Protection (FSO), described as “the agency that protects Putin and organizes his life.

Since the European Union has targeted the Russian leader with several personal sanctions, the superyacht – if found to belong to him – could be seized by the authorities.
