UFC fight night results, highlights: Brian Ortega picks up victory over Yair Rodriguez after shoulder injury

Brian Ortega vs. Yar Rodriguez was expected to be a Fight of the Night or Fight of the Year candidate, but things didn’t unfold as expected. Rodriguez was awarded a first-round finish after Ortega suffered a shoulder injury in their main event clash at UFC Fight Night.

It was shaping up to be a fun fight while it lasted. Ortega was relentless in his forward pressure and Rodriguez was accurate with all kinds of strikes. Notably, Rodriguez landed a great left hand knee to outside leg kick combination early in the round. Ortega leaned into his wrestling and secured a takedown after a failed first attempt. The fight came to a frustrating end when Rodriguez threw his leg for a loose armbar attempt. Ortega gets away with little effort, but he immediately goes back in pain and referee Keith Peterson intervenes.

“It’s unfortunate that he dislocated his shoulder. I already told him we can get it back,” Rodriguez said in his post-fight interview. “Of course, I want to fight for the title. I have a lot of respect — if I say I didn’t respect the champ before, it’s because I didn’t know better. Of course, I have respect for the champ. He’s a fickle animal.”
