The Pittsburgh Penguins will face the Boston Bruins in the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston on January 2.
Fenway Park was revealed as the host venue with the Bruins as the home team for the upcoming Winter Classic during NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s press conference during the 2022 Honda All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas on Feb. 4. Neither an opponent nor a date was announced at this time.
The match will be televised exclusively on TNT in the United States and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada. No start time has been announced.
This is the second consecutive year that Discover has been the main sponsor of the Winter Classic.
This is the first time the game will return to a previous location; the 2010 Winter Classic was held at Fenway Park, with the Bruins defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime.
The Penguins will be playing their third Winter Classic and sixth outdoor game in the NHL. They lost 4-3 in overtime to the Flyers in the 2019 NHL Stadium Series at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Feb. 23, 2019, beat the Flyers 4-2 in the 2017 Stadium Series at Heinz Field in Philadelphia. Pittsburgh on February 25. 2017, and lost 5-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 Stadium Series at Soldier Field in Chicago on March 1, 2014 and 3-1 to the Washington Capitals in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field on January 1, 2011 .
Pittsburgh defeated the Buffalo Sabers 2-1 in a shootout during the inaugural Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on January 1, 2008.
Current Penguins forwards Sidney Crosby and Yevgeny Malkinand defender Kris Letang all played in the first Winter Classic.
The Bruins will be playing their fifth outdoor game in the NHL and their fourth Winter Classic. They lost 5-1 to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on January 1, 2016, and defeated the Blackhawks 4-2 in the 2019 Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium on January 1. January 2019. and the Flyers 7-3 during the 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada on February 21, 2021.
The 2023 Winter Classic will be the NHL’s 36th outdoor game since the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Nov. 22, 2003, when the Canadiens beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3.
The Penguins are primarily owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Fenway Park and its main tenant, the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball.
