When LeBron James recently said that Stephen Curry was the only active NBA player he would want to play with, the Golden State Warriors star replied with a simple, “I’m fine right now.” That, for the moment, seemed to be that. Curry and James don’t have an obvious path to play together in the near future, so the book seemed to be closed.

But Curry opened the door ever so slightly during an appearance on The Draymond Green Show. “Obviously there’s a curiosity,” Curry said when Green pressed. “Like what would that look like?” He went on to joke, “if it was 2K, it would be pretty deadly.”

Barring something extremely unforeseen, Curry and James don’t get the chance to team up anytime soon. Curry signed a long-term extension with Golden State last offseason. James can become a free agent in 2023 but is also eligible for an extension this offseason. Even if he doesn’t sign him, James will have to take a significant pay cut to join the Warriors. He’s earned the most every season since joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014. The most the capped Warriors could offer him would be the ratepayer mid-level exception.

Even though James follows his son, Bronny, regardless of which team signs him, the Warriors don’t have their first-round pick in 2024, the year young James is on track to become draft eligible. . In other words, with time pressing on LeBron’s career, the two certainly won’t get a chance to play together.

But they have faced each other four times in the NBA Finals and are perhaps the two best players from this era in NBA history. It is only natural that they wonder what they would be capable of together. Sadly, it’s just not a partnership we’re likely to ever see.
