The Steam Deck is a pretty powerful device as is, but a modder is showing what happens when a high-end AMD graphics card is attached to it.
It’s been a few weeks since the steam bridge released, and many players have become familiar with the device. Recently, Valve has been seeking user feedback so it can continue working on the handheld system, especially when it comes to the games themselves. One of the main selling points of the machine is the fact that it is essentially a fully functional PC that can be used on the go, giving it an edge in the mobile market. However, one modder wondered what would happen if it could be given the strength of an external desktop graphics card.
In a video uploaded to YouTube a few days ago, the ETA PRIME channel decided to see what would happen if the Steam Deck received different graphics hardware. In this case, it was hooked up to an AMD Radeon 6900 XT, a card almost one and a half times larger than Valve’s device itself. While this makes the handheld console less manageable in that it has to be physically hooked up to the beastly GPU, the goal was to see if this would impact game performance.
When docked using the device’s onboard M.2 and plugged into a PCI-E docking station, the 6900 XT gives a pretty significant boost to the frame rate while streaming. reading. However, overall performance is limited by the Steam Deck’s CPU, meaning it’s unable to unleash the full power of the graphics card. That being said, games like The Witcher 3 and GTA 5 show a marked improvement in fps on 4K outputs. But in games like Ring of Elden and Cyberpunk 2077, there doesn’t seem to be much of a boost. But, again, this is probably due to the processor.
Since the Steam Deck now has over 2000 verified or playable games, the main attribute users are interested in is how well it works. Even though it’s essentially a portable PC, the addition of the AMD card means it can no longer be transported. However, the video itself is just a fun little exercise to see how the Deck can be modified.
With Valve discussing the future of its wearable device, the steam bridge has the potential to have a real impact on the mobile gaming industry. There are still a few startup issues a minute, especially when trying to install something like Windows, but all the feedback provided by users will hopefully give the developer the chance to make meaningful improvements to the future iterations.
