‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ isn’t streaming yet, but it should be this summer

Spider-Man: No Way Home was the first film of the pandemic to hit $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue. But even though months have passed since its theatrical release, and even though it has become available for purchase online, the film is still not streaming on a subscription service.

Even though actor Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears regularly in Disney’s Marvel movies, that doesn’t mean the latest Spider-Man movie will be nearing Disney Plus anytime soon.

And last year, an unprecedented number of new theatrical movies hit streaming services the same day they hit theaters. HBO Max, in particular, has become synonymous with the practice. But HBO Max is not – and will not be – streamed Spider-Man: No Coming Home.

Sony Pictures is the distributor behind No Way Home, and its deal with Starz means Now Way Home will eventually air there.

Where and when will Spider-Man: No Way Home be available to stream?

It’s likely that No Way Home will be available to stream via Starz between late June and early August, but the network has yet to confirm the date.

Sony has struck a deal to have its 2021 films premiere on premium cable network Starz, where they can be viewed on its traditional channels as well as its streaming app. Starz will therefore be the first place you can stream this latest Sony film. Traditionally, a movie like No Way Home made its way to Starz around six to nine months after it hit theaters.

In February, Hollywood trade publication Deadline reported that No Way Home was set to arrive on Starz within six months, which would put the film’s streaming release sometime before early August.

If No Way Home follows the precedent of Sony’s previous Spider-Man universe film, it could be coming to Starz as early as early July. Sony originally released Venom: Let There Be Carnage in theaters on October 1, and it arrived streaming on Starz about six and a half months later on April 22. It’s just over 200 days between its theatrical release and its subscription streaming release. If No Way Home sticks to the same schedule, it will be available on or around July 4th.

Will Spider-Man: No Way Home ever be on Disney Plus?

It’s possible, but it won’t be on Disney Plus anytime soon unless Disney and Sony make a new deal.

Spider-Man, as a character, derives from Marvel, but Disney’s Marvel has a complicated licensing deal with Sony for the Spider-Man characters on film. Basically, Sony is responsible for creating and distributing standalone Spider-Man universe movies, and then Disney’s Marvel can “borrow” the characters for movies in its own Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s why Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears in the Avengers movies.

This is also why you can stream movies on Disney Plus featuring Holland as Spider-Man – but you can’t stream one of the Spider-Man specific movies there.

The same arrangement extends to the Venom movies and Morbius movie coming this year. They’re Marvel characters, but the movies are Sony-distributed movies, so they’re not headed to Disney Plus anytime soon.

You may have read about how the Spider-Man movies will be coming to Disney Plus thanks to a new deal struck last year. That’s true but it’s tricky – the deal may not apply to No Way Home.

Disney got a deal with sony in April to stream select movies from the Spider-Man catalog as well as Sony movies theatrically released between 2022 and 2026. First off, those 2022-2026 theatrical releases won’t be coming to Disney Plus for many, many months; they will actually be exclusively on Netflix first. But since No Way Home’s theatrical release was in 2021, that part of the deal doesn’t apply there anyway. Second, neither Sony nor Disney confirm when – or even if – No Way Home would be considered a “catalogue” film that could stream on Disney Plus.

Bottom line: If you’re holding your breath for No Way Home to air on Disney Plus, it’ll be a long time before you can expire – if ever.

Will Spider-Man: No Way Home air on HBO Max?

No, not in the foreseeable future.

HBO Max streams all Warner Bros. movies, and it’s known for aggressively securing TV and streaming rights to top films. And HBO Max has been closely tied to the concept of same-day streaming, as it has released more movies this way than any other streaming service. It created misguided hope among moviegoers when any new movie hits theaters. Without knowing which studio is distributing this new movie, many people are wondering if it is also one of the movies available on HBO Max.

But Spider-Man is distributed by Sony, not Warner Bros., and HBO doesn’t have a deal to show Sony movies first, so No Way Home isn’t on its way to HBO Max.
