Rep. Jamie Raskin Flames Putin ‘Cheerleader’ Marjorie Taylor Greene

Calling fellow Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) directly, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) burned Vladimir Putin’s “cheerleaders” in Congress and urged Americans to stand on the “right side of the story”.

Raskin, a member of the House committee investigating the 2021 U.S. Capitol uprising, lambasted “the very distinguished lady from Georgia” for her comments last month on a radio show in which she accused Ukraine from being invaded by Russia because it “just kept biting the bear.

“We have members of Congress who are cheerleaders for Vladimir Putin, and are just voices of defeatism, fatalism and pessimism for democracy in Europe,” Raskin said, “and so they try to distracting with lots of bogus rhetoric about other issues.” He then referred to Greene’s claim that NATO supported neo-Nazis in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s own justification for its invasion.

“My friends, we have to decide which side we are on,” he continued.

Raskin said Americans in World War II didn’t watch Nazis marching down the streets in Europe and there were ‘very fine people on both sides’, a reference to comments by former President Donald Trump on the murderous white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2019.

“They didn’t start encouraging Mussolini, Hitler and Franco,” he added. “And yet we have people here who come out and talk about Vladimir Putin’s side.”

Raskin and Rep. Jared Huffman (D-California) released a resolution on Friday calling for May 4 to be recognized as a “National Day of Reason” in America.

The resolution is a “call to celebrate reason, empirical research, knowledge, facts and science as benchmarks of democratic progress,” the lawmakers said in a statement.

“Right now, authoritarian despots from Moscow to Mar-a-Lago are promoting conspiracy theories, bigotry and propaganda to undermine the habits of critical thinking and logical reasoning that are at the heart of our democracy,” Raskin said. . “We must fight the flood of misinformation and lies in order to restore truth and reason to their rightful place in our democracy.”
