When gamers think of the old west in video games, chances are characters like Red Dead RedemptionJohn Marston and Arthur Morgan are among the first things that come to mind. Their appearances and illustrations are as iconic as Red Dead Redemption itself, so finding them somewhere outside of the game world might come as a surprise.
One of these appearances surprised a fan of the series recently, after discovering a large mural depicting Arthur Morgan. Anyone who has played Red Dead Redemption 2 will recognize it, as it’s the same image used on the cover of the game.
The location in question was brought to the attention of fellow fans by Reddit user Goldiestein. The restaurant is called Native Slider and is a western style restaurant, offering American style dishes. Located in Kuwait, the shared photo reveals a mural visible through the restaurant’s windows. Other photos from the location show that an additional mural of the same image of Arthur appears to be on the outside of the building, alongside a silhouette of cowboys.
Fans who responded to Goldiestein’s post were quick to joke about Rockstar Games’ lawyers rushing to Kuwait. Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two have proven to be very protective of their intellectual properties, routinely rolling back fan mods of their games. This image is extremely unlikely to be used with permission, although given the restaurant’s geographic location, it seems less likely that Rockstar will pursue legal action against the store. Others joked about what might be served there, referring to common ingredients and foods found in the game.
It is not clear at this time if the owner is a fan of Red Dead Redemption themselves, or if they are even aware of the origin of art. It’s possible they hired someone to create western-themed artwork for the venue, and the artist may have recreated the box art without telling the owner. Either way, however, this isn’t the first time Arthur’s likeness has been used to try and sell something outside of the United States. Fans have already discovered a screenshot of John Marston being used on a box of boots.
The next game of Red Dead Redemption the series is said to be in development, exciting fans about what’s to come. Unfortunately, based on the restaurant’s Google Business listing, it looks like the Native Slider location is now permanently closed, so fans in the area can only take a peek, rather than the try for themselves. They’ll just have to settle for visiting a saloon or cooking pot as Arthur themselves in-game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia and Xbox One.
