Real Madrid 2-0 Getafe: Vinicius Junior shines in routine La Liga win

Casemiro scored Real’s first goal in a routine win

Real Madrid regained a 12-point lead at the top of La Liga and prepared for their key Champions League game against Chelsea with a routine win over Getafe.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side saw their lead reduced to nine points when they won Sevilla on Friday, but they were never shy about restoring it at home.

Casemiro led them in front with a sublime outside cross from the foot of Vinicius Junior before half-time.

And Lucas Vazquez’s side came home after Rodrygo’s pass after the break.

It was a dominant night at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real registering 26 shots to Getafe’s eight. Enes Unal hit the post-foot for the visitors in injury time, but in truth Real had long been playing within themselves, perhaps with an eye on their Champions League commitments.

Vinicius deserved his own praise and earned the standing ovation he received when he was taken off late. His creative moment to bend a ball into the path of Casemiro’s dive finally opened the game and highlighted his undeniable talent.

Federico Valverde went close in every half, Eder Militao will wonder how he missed the target with a free header and, as the pace slackened, Gareth Bale was brought in late as Real claimed a sixth win in seven league matches.

They face Chelsea in the Spanish capital on Tuesday and defend a 3-1 aggregate lead in a bid to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
