The design, features and potential capabilities of Sony’s PSVR 2 were only recently announced. Marketed with a push for new properties and experiences like Horizon: The Call of the Mountain, Sony seemed to be gearing up to kick off with its next-gen VR headset. However, a tweet from a prominent figure in the VR component supply chain suggests that the device could be released much later than expected.

A tweet from Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), recently suggests that Sony has already delayed the PSVR 2 release internally. The tweet claims that shipment of VR screens will increase by 50% in 2022 despite production delays from Apple and Sony. An article on DSCC’s website also claims that 80% of all VR screen shipments go to Meta, which doesn’t leave much room for the large allocation needed to launch a VR headset by the end. of the year.

Although Sony never set an official release date, the PSVR 2 was expected to release during the 2022 holiday season. An internal PSVR 2 delay isn’t entirely surprising. Just like the many other games that experienced delays, a hardware delay fits in perfectly, although the cause of the delay does not seem to be specified. This tweet is generally talking about VR screens that are expected to ship in significant increases throughout the year, so at least on that front there are no issues in that supply chain. A PSVR 2 delay may be to blame for the admittedly shortened line of supply chain issues that have plagued the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for nearly a year and a half. .

It’s also possible that the PSVR 2 delay has nothing to do with diminishing supply chain issues and is about refining the functionality of the PSVR 2 headset and giving companies that create games or experiences on PSVR 2 more time to adapt and fully utilize its capabilities. Over time, Sony will eventually address these delay rumors and either confirm and explain why, or deny them.

Sony has left many details about the development of PSVR 2 secret, but a possible delay of the next-gen VR device would make waves in this subsection of the game. There has been a marked push for more VR content and potential involvement with the Metaverse. Sony missing out on the first founding moment of any potential Metaverse advance could stifle the growth of PSVR 2.
