N’Golo Kante has been reprimanded by Antonio Rudiger after his error nearly led to a Real Madrid goal

N’Golo Kante was the target of a reprimand from Antonio Rudiger, after the defender had to clean up the mess from his teammates on Tuesday night.

Chelsea were very unlucky to be knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Real Madrid, after their emotional performance at the Bernabeu.

If it hadn’t been for a moment of pure genius from Luka Modric they would have won in normal times and then Karim Benzema did what Karim Benzema does and scored the crucial winner in extra time.

While it was a good night for most of Chelsea’s yellow sides, performance-wise, Kante was rather lacking and was involved in both of Real’s goals.

He also had to be saved by Rudiger on another occasion. With the level of play overall and Les Bleus 2-0 down on the evening, the French midfielder dropped the ball to Toni Kroos in midfield.

Kroos was able to advance smoothly, once Kante had missed a tackle, and played a brilliant ball for Vinicius Junior, only for Rudiger to make a brilliant challenge and then get up and yell at his teammate.

It was only five minutes before that Marcos Alonso thought he had put his side ahead for the first time in the tie, only to have VAR rule it out, after Rudger’s header just after halftime the has equalized.

Minutes after Timo Werner put his side ahead, only for Modric to provide the ball of the night for Rodrygo to level things up on aggregate.

Kante gave away the ball before the incident and when Benzema scored the winner, it was the former Leicester City man who was late to shut down a loose ball in midfield during the build-up.

Rudiger, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, focused on the mistakes he and his team made in the two matches.

“Across both sets if you make those kinds of mistakes you get punished,” the centre-back told BT Sports after the game.

“It was do or die for us. Before the game not everyone thought we could make it 3-0, but then the individual class comes through with Modric and Benzema, now we’re here.

“The good thing is that we didn’t give up. Few teams can come here and dominate them like we did. But in both games, if you make the mistakes we made, you are punished.”
