Lori Vallow, mother charged with child murders, is now fit to stand trial, Idaho judge says

An Idaho judge ruled on Monday that a mother accused of conspiring to kill her children, her ex-husband and a lover’s wife is now mentally capable to stand trial on some of the charges in Idaho. .

The case against her had been held for months after Judge Steven Boyce ordered her committed to a mental institution so that she could undergo treatment with the aim of making her mentally fit enough to help in her own defence.

Boyce’s new order said Lori Vallow Daybell “is restored to competency and is fit to prosecute” in the Idaho murder case. He did not provide further details about his treatment or mental state.

She is expected to be officially arraigned next week and Lori and Chad Daybell are expected to go on trial together early next year.

An indictment said Chad and Lori Daybell, while still married to other people, began espousing an apocalyptic religious belief system in 2018.

Authorities grew suspicious, however, when Chad and Lori Daybell married two weeks later, and investigators had Tammy Daybell’s body exhumed for an autopsy. Authorities have not released the cause of his death, but his children told CBS News’ “48 Hours” that their mother was asphyxiated.

Police started looking for Lori Daybell’s two youngest children in November after relatives raised concerns. The Daybells quickly left town and were found months later in Hawaii without the children.

Investigators later found the bodies of JJ and Tylee buried in Chad Daybell’s yard in Idaho. They didn’t reveal the cause of death, but court documents say Tylee’s body was partially burned.

The Daybells’ friends told investigators the couple believed people could become “zombies” if they were possessed by evil spirits, a state in which their souls were trapped in limbo, according to police reports. The couple believed the only way to rid a person of a zombie was to kill their body, according to police reports.

A friend of the couple, Melanie Gibb, told investigators Lori Daybell called her youngest children “zombies,” and Arizona police said the couple exchanged text messages saying Tammy Daybell was possessed by a dark spirit.
