Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., enjoyed massive fundraising in the first quarter of 2022, but closer examination reveals that the vast majority of that money was sent to her from heavily Democratic regions and not from his home state of Wyoming. .

Cheney raised nearly $3 million in the first quarter of 2022 and brought his total fundraising to over $10 million, with the campaign having close to $7 million in cash. But that vast majority of those dollars did not come from his home state, with just 3.8% of the money coming from Wyoming compared to 96.2% elsewhere in the country, according to data compiled by Open Secrets.

HAGEMAN URGES WYOMING VOTERS TO SEND CHENEY ‘HOME TO VIRGINIA’

Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, has become a controversial figure within the Republican Party. She was removed from her House GOP leadership position last year and eventually censured by the Republican National Committee for her participation in the Democratic-led Jan. 6 Committee.

These developments did not go down well with legislature voters in Wyoming, a state Trump won by nearly 64 points in 2020. Cheney’s newfound unpopularity opened the door to a lead challenge from Harriet Hageman, a 2018 Wyoming gubernatorial candidate who won Trump’s endorsements. and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarty, R-Calif., with a poll showing the challenger up 20 points over the incumbent lawmaker.

Potentially bleak re-election prospects have drawn a lot of money for Cheney’s campaign, but much of that money has come from areas more commonly associated with Democratic voters.

The top five metropolitan areas where Cheney has received donations are Washington, DC, New York, Dallas, Bridgeport, Connecticut and Boston, according to data from Open Secrets. Major ZIP codes where donations come from include DC suburbs such as McClean, Virginia, Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, DC itself. Other popular zip codes included New York, Dallas, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The data shows that Cheney also received more than three times as much money from California, $669.43,000, as she received from her home state of Wyoming, $217.68,000.

Cheney’s campaign declined to comment for this story.

The money put Hageman, who raised $1.3 million in the first quarter of 2022, at a serious fundraising disadvantage. Hageman’s campaign has raised just over $2 million in total and currently has just over $1 million in cash, but the campaign noted earlier this month that no incumbent Republicans has passed its first trimester.

Hageman, who in the past has supported and advised Cheney, noted that his campaign relies on grassroots support. The challenger claimed that she received more than 21,000 donations for her campaign, with the average first-quarter donation of $84.

“It is an honor to have such support and I pledge to always reflect the opinions and values of the people of Wyoming when I am in Congress,” Hageman said in a statement earlier this month. “This is Wyoming’s seat in the House, not an individual’s seat.”
