President Biden’s HHS has gone all out on radical transgender ideology, encouraging early body-altering medical interventions as “gender-affirming” care. Excerpt from the HHS Office of Population Affairs publication:
Gender affirming care is a form of supportive health care. It consists of a range of services which may include medical, surgical, mental health and non-medical services for transgender and non-binary people.
For transgender and non-binary children and adolescents, early gender-affirming care is critical to overall health and well-being, as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system.
And it can also ruin their life.
What types of interventions constitute ‘gender-affirming early care’?
Social Affirmation: Adopting gender-affirming hairstyles, clothing, names, gender pronouns, toilets, and other facilities When: At any age or stage. Reversible
Puberty blockers: Use of certain types of hormones to interrupt puberty development. When: During puberty. Reversible.
Hormonal therapy: Testosterone hormones for women at birth Estrogen hormones for women at birth. When: In early adolescence. Partially reversible
Gender affirming surgeries: “Upper” surgery – to create a typical male chest shape or enhance the breasts “Lower” surgery – surgery on the genitals or reproductive organs Facial feminization or other procedures. When: Typically used in adulthood or on a case-by-case basis in adolescence. Not reversible.
It’s horrible. Children and adolescents with gender dysphoria definitely need proper care and support. But puberty blocking is not benign and can lead to unwanted medical problems such as reduced bone density – which is why it’s no longer recommended in the UK and Finland, for example.
Mutilating surgeries on the genitals and breasts of minors should be completely excluded. They are irreversible, cause sterilization of the genitals and eliminate healthy organs.
At the very least, the government should recognize that these drastic interventions are controversial, remain experimental – puberty blockers are “off-label” uses of drugs approved to treat adolescent pathologies – and, indeed, sometimes leave permanently injured patients. This is especially true in cases where they “detransition” – that is, they regain acceptance that they are, indeed, the gender they were born with.
Expect the usual suspects to accuse those who oppose this drastic recommendation of being motivated by hate as a way to stifle reasoned speech. Indeed, President Unity has previously called state laws intended to protect transgender minors from such interference “hateful”.
The reality is exactly the opposite. Love demands that we stand up for the reproductive future of children and their bodily integrity, especially in a time of moral panic that rages when emotions rule the day. Adults can do whatever they want. But minors need protection, sometimes even against themselves.
