Guide to Gibraltar – Apex Legends

Balancing your team composition in Apex Legends is an important part of winning. Gibraltar is among the most defensive, with abilities all aimed at holding your ground and protecting teammates. Used effectively, Gibraltar can save the lives of teammates and turn the tide of battle by making your team’s position more defensible than the enemy’s. But perhaps more than most other characters in Apex Legends, effective communication with Gibraltar is key, as he can sometimes do as much harm as good.

Playing as Gibraltar takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you’ll save your squad with domed shields and potentially drop entire squads with mortar strikes effective. We’ve got everything you need to know about Gibraltar’s abilities, plus some tips to help you get the most out of any situation when playing with him.

All About Defensive Abilities

Gibraltar is referred to as the “Armored Fortress” on the legends select screen, and that’s the best way to think of it. Most of his abilities are all about soaking up damage and pushing the other team away from your team, and they’re all useful in a pinch when you’re in a bad spot. Gibraltar is great to have on a team for fights that don’t go your way, like when you need a second to heal, reset, or retreat.

In any given fight, Gibraltar is one step ahead of whoever he fights with his gun shield passive capacity. It is a damage-absorbing shield that covers his abdomen whenever he aims at the sights of a gun.

His dome shield tactical ability can be essential in any given fight. It creates 15 seconds of protection around a given area, absorbing any incoming or outgoing fire. This makes it great for blocking big attacks like airstrikes, but whenever you’re faced with a less than great situation, the shield can keep you alive long enough to orient yourself and get the upper hand.

While Gibraltar’s abilities are mostly about defending against gunfire, his ultimate can deal serious damage to unsuspecting enemies. Defensive bombardment is a mortar strike that drops bombs around a smoke grenade that Gibraltar throws across the battlefield, and anyone caught in the middle can be pretty destroyed by it.

Save your Dome Shield for when you really need it

The trick with Gibraltar is not to be too cocky about the circular shields he can throw. Yes, they are good at absorbing damage and can give you a few extra seconds in a fight, but used incorrectly they can also become a huge liability. Overreliance on your shields can leave you vulnerable to smart players, and they can block your teammates as well as your enemies. Communication about when to use your abilities is key to using them effectively, so your team knows exactly what to expect and when to expect it. Almost none of the other characters require as much team awareness as an efficient Gibraltar.

Remember: you are the tank…

Gibraltar is a defensive hero, and you should try to use him as such whenever possible. That doesn’t mean you don’t fight when you need to – aggression often pays off in Apex Legends, as giving a team a chance to heal or revive enemies can cause you to lose a fight. But the Dome Shield and Defensive Bombardment abilities are great for slowing or stopping an opposing team or giving your teammates the advantage, so always think about how you can help keep your team alive.

…but don’t rely too much on your Gun Shield

Your Gun Shield is a handy boost in a fight, but it comes with some serious drawbacks, so think about when you want to use it and when you don’t. It blocks a lot less damage than you might think, and the mobility loss means more shots attack you. Use the Gun Shield when you have weapon advantage, with something like a shotgun or LMG, at a range where you’re more likely to do more damage than you take. It can also be effective when shooting if you have extra cover. Either way, though, don’t blindly rely on the Gun Shield to save you. It’s best for giving you an advantage, and that advantage can be especially useful at closer ranges.

You can turn off Gibraltar’s Gun Shield at any time, and if you’re trying to stealthily target enemies without being seen, it’s a good idea to turn it off. Seen by opponents, the shield is a large, glowing orange rectangle, and like the Dome Shield, it is highly visible. Don’t forget to turn it back on for closer fights.

Your ultimate is, well, the ultimate zoning tool

Defensive Bombardment is a very versatile ultimate. Drop it at the start of a fight to force another squad into cover, or wait until you’re nearby and they engage in combat to turn the battlefield into a disaster zone. Bombardment is also great for landing enemies you’ve knocked down: in most cases mortar strikes will kill them, and you might get lucky as a teammate tries to revive. Just note that you can take damage from your own shelling, but your teammates will be immune to it.

If you have a downed teammate, try throwing the Defensive Bombardment at their location, then run and drop a Dome Shield. Mortars will prevent anyone from charging at you, in most cases, while Shield will give you plenty of time to pick up your teammate, with the possibility that they also have time to heal a bit too.

You don’t just need to use bombardments to attack enemies or cover yourself – try to drop them at choke points or areas where you fear a team is trying to flank you. Bombardment is deadly, but its true defensive function is to push squads out of position and move them, so try to use it to control the battlefield.

Bait them, but play it safe

Domes are extremely visible to the enemy, and they go through walls, so they reveal your position every time you use them. It is however possible to use this to your advantage; dropping a shield tricks an enemy squad into thinking they know where you are, giving you a chance to try not to be there. Misdirection can be especially effective with Bangalore’s Smoke or Caustic’s Gas, allowing you to move away from the shield while your enemies focus on the wrong thing.

However, Dome Shields are actually very vulnerable, so be careful how you use them. They block incoming fire, but turn into deadly traps if an enemy with a shotgun gets bold enough to run. Try to use them from a distance when possible to avoid anyone getting close to you, and remember that being behind the shield is just as effective at stopping the fire as being inside. Stay mobile and adapt even when shielded.

If you’re trying to escape a fight, try dropping the Dome Shield behind you as you go. It will block incoming fire like a wall as you keep moving, allowing you to move away from your attackers while they fire at you. If you’re lucky, the shield’s position might also cause them to lose track of you.
