Gaetz Grills Secretary of Defense Wbout Wokeism in Fiery Exchange

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) asked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about the military awakening, prompting a heated exchange between the two during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday.

Specifically, Gaetz demanded an answer on why the Pentagon’s National Defense University, which is funded by US taxpayers, hosted a conference in February on why socialism was the answer to the struggle. against China.

The lecture, first reported by Breitbart News on February 11, was given by French socialite Thomas Piketty to members of the future top military leaders attending the school.

“Secretary Austin, why should American taxpayers fund lectures at the National Defense University that promote socialism as a strategy against China?” Gaetz asked.

Austin replied, “The National Defense University is an academic institution, and I don’t know of any—of such a conference.”

Gaetz called this answer “surprising” because it was widely reported. He added, “Would you agree that embracing socialism is not an effective strategy to fight China?”

Austin said he “definitely” disagreed with the “embracing” of socialism before top Democrat and Speaker Adam Smith (D-WA) attempted to halt the questioning. Under further questioning, Austin again denied embracing socialism.

Gaetz asked Austin why the Pentagon should be funded at President Biden’s request for $773 billion when his leaders have been making calls for strategy.

“You told us that Russia cannot lose. You told us that the Taliban could not win immediately. And so I guess I’m wondering what, of the $773 billion that you’re asking for today, is going to help you make accurate assessments in the face of so many missed calls? Gaetz asked Austin.

Austin balked at first, saying, “You’ve seen how the budget aligns with our strategy, so I’m going to let that speak for itself.”

However, things escalated from there. Gaetz also pointed out that the United States was also behind China and Russia in the development of hypersonic missiles. Austin asked him how he made that assessment.

Gaetz retorted: “I make this assessment because Russia actually used one. By the way, your own people have informed us that we are behind and China is winning. Are you aware of the briefings we’re getting on hypersonic? »

Austin replied moodily, “I’m certainly aware of the briefings we provide to Congress.”

Gaetz referred to China’s bullying of record-breaking missile tests by Taiwan and North Korea over the past year.

“While everyone in the world seems to be building capacity and being more strategic, we’ve had time to embrace critical race theory at West Point, to embrace socialism at National Defense University, to take mandatory pronoun training,” he said.

After Austin got defensive and accused Gaetz of being embarrassed by his country and his military, Gaetz fired back, “Oh, no, no, I’m embarrassed by your leadership. I am not ashamed for my country. I hope we don’t lose to China. He added:

It’s so shameful that you would sit here and confuse your failures with the failures of the military in uniform. You said Russia would invade Ukraine in 36 days. You said the Taliban would be kept at bay for months. You totally messed up those calls. And maybe we’d be better off if the National Defense University worked a little more on strategy and a little less on awakening.

“I saw that the Obama administration tried to destroy our military by depriving it of resources. And it looks like the Biden administration is trying to destroy our military by force-feeding it revival. I give in,” Gaetz concluded.
