First successful transaction without Internet thanks to RadioDoge

KEY POINTS

  • The Dogecoin Foundation is working on various projects to make the same coin more accessible to users
  • One of these projects is RadioDoge
  • RadioDoge Allows Dogecoin Transactions to Happen Even Without the Internet

Dogecoin, the world’s first-ever dog-themed coin, made an indelible mark on the annals of cryptocurrency history by successfully sending the first DOGE transaction without using the internet, made possible by RadioDoge .

The Dogecoin Foundation core development team announced that a Doge transaction was successfully sent 100 miles from its origin via radio transmission using a protocol called RadioDoge and with the help of the Starlink satellite network. This evolution means that it is now possible to process transactions in remote areas, especially in places where traditional Internet infrastructure is limited or non-existent.

Dogecoin Foundation developer Michi Lumin shared the news on Twitter on Friday detailing the first transaction involving sending “4.2069 dogecoin” tokens “100 miles” using RadioDoge and “just libdogecoin, radio, and ultimately relayed to the mainnet at the other end via Starlink”. Libdogecoin is a C-based library of Dogecoin protocols that serve as building blocks for various DOGE projects.

The transaction was heard over 800 miles away, according to Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing. RadioDoge is the brainchild of the Dogecoin Foundation, which focuses on the use of low-cost radio Technology (HF/LoRaWAN) with the help of the Starlink satellite to provide affordable, large-scale access to the dog-themed meme room “for people beyond the reach of traditional internet infrastructure”.

The team set up the Radio Doge Regional Hub a few days ago, which served as a test bed for this next-generation technology. The Radio Doge project together with LibDogecoin, “are exciting first steps towards realizing the goal of making Dogecoin an unstoppable financial vehicle, one that will enable financial freedom from power structures and provide a medium of exchange for future generations.”

It should be noted, however, that Dogecoin is not the first cryptocurrency to send transactions over radio waves. Technological concepts such as amateur radio equipment, mesh networks, and portable antennas have enabled people to transact Bitcoin even without internet access.

Dogecoin was trading down 4.92% at $0.1281, with 24-hour volume of $16,991,032,651, as of 8:50 p.m. ET Sunday, based on data from COinMarketCap.
