Disco Elysium creator ZA/UM is looking for artists with a “love of sci-fi and video games” and the ability to create “unworldly environments.”
Spotted by eagle-eyed members of the Disco Elysium subreddit, job listings for three new artistic positions at the studio are likely hinting at what themes and motifs may be evident in the studio’s next game.
Interestingly, RPG fans don’t think this marks a major departure for the team, though, especially given the “how long [the creators] Disco has cultivated the setting of Elysium”.
“Not sure how much has changed at the company, but the leaders have talked about how much time they’ve spent cultivating the setting of Disco Elysium (which is also the setting of the main author’s book) and how they want to do it. Use that to move forward,” TheFrankOfTurducken explained. “So my guess is that it will be the same ‘world’ as DE, but in a different specific location.”
That said, Hamlet specifically asks someone who “understands that heaven and earth are more than dreams of philosophy” as well as “architecture or city planning” and “new worlds” that surely have fans guessing. Next up for the team (thanks, PC Gamer).
A new deal between Amazon and dj2 Entertainment could see both Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium adapted for film and TV. Amazon recently inked a deal to co-produce Sonic Films “to develop and produce content that will stream exclusively on Prime Video, including the above games, along with TV adaptations of gaming IPs”.
Disco Elysium: Final Cut was banned in Australia in March 2021 after the Classification Board refused to reclassify it because it “depicted[s]to reveal[es] or otherwise contract[s] Sexuality, drug abuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or rebellion or abomination in such a way that they offend against standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified.”
This decision was overturned the following May, but the censored game’s “high impact themes, coarse language and drug references” secured an 18 restricted category.
