Davis Love III says US succession plan is ‘a bit messed up right now’

Davis Love III said on Wednesday that the USA team captain succession plan was in flux after controversial remarks from Phil Mickelson cast doubt on its future viability.

Speaking ahead of RBC Heritage, where Love celebrated his 58th birthday and announced two alternate captains for the upcoming Presidents Cup, Love was asked why one of his new vice-captains, Fred Couples, had never been asked to lead the USA Ryder Cup team.

“Fred is good in the locker room, in a practice round, as a captain – I thought he would have been a great Ryder Cup captain,” Love said. “He could still be Ryder Cup captain.

“We may have to fill a gap somewhere now. Our order is kind of messed up right now. So maybe Fred would be a great home game [captain] At New York.”

Love was presumably referring to the ongoing drama involving Mickelson, who was widely speculated to be the next Americans’ home captain in 2025 at Bethpage Black, given his huge popularity in New York. But Love’s response seems to indicate that Mickelson has either been removed from the leadership succession plan or that the powers that be are awaiting his next move. Mickelson is currently taking an indefinite leave from the game following disparaging remarks he made on both the PGA Tour and the Saudis.

Zach Johnson will lead the USA team for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy. The decision to become captain in 2025 would probably not be made for around 20 months.

United States Presidents Cup captain Davis Love III has begun to round out his support squad.

Love was also asked about the role Tiger Woods will play for the Americans at Quail Hollow this fall as they look to win for the 12th time in 14 matches. Woods, who played his first official event in 17 months at last week’s Masters, was captain for the 2019 matches at Royal Melbourne.

“Any role he wants,” Love said of Woods’ involvement, before adding, “Anything he wants to do.”

Woods served as alternate captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup and 2017 Ryder Cup. Like Mickelson, he also has a special connection to Bethpage Black, having won the US Open there in 2002.
