Christina Ricci is cast as a cast member of Netflix spin-off The Addams Family on Wednesday, but not in the role fans might expect.
Every time the new netflix original Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday makes its debut on the streaming giant, it will bring a fan-favorite actress with it. Christina Ricci has officially been added to the cast of the Netflix series, though she apparently isn’t playing the character most fans might have expected.
As you might expect, Netflix Wednesday will focus on the precocious young girl from the Addams Family, and the main character will be played by Jenna Ortega. The series is billed as a “coming of age” comedy directed by Tim Burton and written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. The show will focus on Wednesday Addams’ days at Nevermore Academy and will also involve supernatural research.
According to Deadline, Christina Ricci – who recently had a wink and miss role in The Matrix 4 – was signed as a series regular. Although details of who she will be playing are being kept under wraps, it is believed that she will be an all-new character. Ricci was reportedly brought on board after Thora Birch left the project, and although she is playing a different character, he is similar and will replace the role previously played by Birch.
Rumors of Ricci joining Wednesday’s cast have been circulating ever since the show was announced. Most thought there might be a chance she would make an appearance as the older Wednesday Addams. With Ortega slated to take on a high school version of the character for the Wednesday Addams series, it looks like the show isn’t heading in that direction anymore, if it ever was.
Ricci’s portrayal of Morticia and Gomez Addams’ young daughter is so beloved by fans of the “reboot” films that when Wednesday was first announced, it wasn’t just rumors that fueled talk of her returning to the role. Fans have actually started a petition to have Burton hire the actress to play the role once again. It looks like Burton was able to please fans of the actress without changing her take on the show too much.
Now that the yellow jackets star is on board, it seems that Wednesday indeed has quite the star-studded cast. In addition to Ricci and Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones will play the family matriarch in Morticia and comic great Luis Guzmán will play her husband, Gomez. For the moment, it is not yet known when the Netflix The series is set to debut on the streaming giant.
Wednesday is expected to air sometime later in 2022.
