BioWare Support Studio workers folder for unionization

People who supported Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem began to organize.

Workers at the BioWare support studio known as Keywords have just filed an application to form a union according to a document that was recently submitted to the Alberta Labor Relations Board which later ended up on Reddit . The affected employees are currently preparing a vote on the issue. If this unionization vote passes, Keywords workers could bargain collectively for better wages and benefits. The union would also be able to protect company employees from abuse.

Keywords works with a variety of different studios around the world to provide support during the game development process. This includes everything from quality assurance and localization to game design and programming. The studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, BioWare, has a long relationship with the company. Keywords recently provided development support for Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem.

“Local 401 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union of Canada has applied under the Labor Relations Code to become the certified bargaining agent for a unit of employees of Keywords Studios British Columbia Incorporated, compromising all employees employed in development support at BioWare’s Edmonton office,” the document filed with the Alberta Labor Relations Board reads as follows. It goes on to say that “if the Board certifies that the application meets the requirements of the Code, including that the union has at least 40% support of the employees in the proposed bargaining unit, it may hold a representation vote by ballot. secret. The ballot will ask employees if they want the union to represent them in collective bargaining with the employer.

There is currently no indication that anyone opposes the formation of a union, but the document submitted to the Alberta Labor Relations Board notes that “employees who oppose the application must file their objections by writing to the Commission, providing full details in support of their position. Objections must relate to the statutory requirement of the Code and not merely to statements for or against the union becoming the bargaining agent. Support for or against the union is determined by voting.

People from across the gaming industry have shown their support for the Keywords workers. The union organizer at Activision Blizzard Jessica Gonzalez for example mentioned on Twitter that “QA for BioWare is unionizing!” Big win! Solidarity!” The newly formed union representing Raven Software workers also expressed support.
