- New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Giuliani has referenced his baby in anti-transgender remarks.
- He said he had “looked under the hood” of the 4-month-old and “she is going to be a woman”.
- He said he told her, “‘I’m the only boyfriend until you’re 25.'”
New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Giuliani, the son of former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, sparked outrage and disgust by referring to his 4-month-old daughter while making anti-transgender comments during of a far-right rally.
Giuliani was condemning options for transgender people at the weekend event when he said he “looked under the hood” at his daughter and “she’s going to stay female,” The Daily Beast reported.
Besides being cringe-worthy and disturbing, Giuliani’s comments were factually flawed. Scientists say anatomy doesn’t always match or determine a person’s sex. The comments come as Republicans target transgender people in state legislatures across the country, particularly with bills banning transgender youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
If his bid for governor of New York was successful, he would likely follow other conservative state leaders in trying to curb the rights of transgender people.
Keri Rodrigues, co-founder and president of the National Union of Parents, called Giuliani’s comments “disgusting” and “astounding” for a parent, whose job it is to support a child uncompromisingly.
Giuliani also said his daughter made him a promise as he held her and his wife slept. “And I get emotional thinking about it, but she made me a promise. She shook my hand and I said, ‘I’m the only boyfriend until you’re 25, squeeze it. my hand.’
He added: “So I changed nappies. I looked under the hood. She’s a woman. I’m going to be the last guy in a long time to look under the hood. But guess what? She was born female and she’s going to stay a woman, it’s as simple as that.”
Critics disgusted by his comments are also being gagged on social media over the ‘creepy’ comments, with political commentator SE Cupp in writing, “I am going to throw up.”
Musician Eva Friedman wrote, “This quote from Andrew Giuliani will haunt me for the rest of my life.”
Others commented on his slim political chances and expressed sympathy for the child. Another Twitter user reference the “bizarre, even vile outlook regarding: their daughters” from Giuliani and Trump’s men. The UK’s Independent has compiled a list of inappropriate comments made by former President Donald Trump about his daughter Ivanka, including ‘maybe I’d date her’ if she wasn’t his daughter.
A spokesperson for Giuliani told The Daily Beast, “Although Andrew does not claim to be a biologist, he can tell the difference between a man and a woman.”
Keri Rodrigues of the National Union of Parents told Insider that Giuliani’s comments were disappointing from someone who has an “extraordinary opportunity” to use their platform to do good things for children.
“It’s the promise that we as adults and parents make to our children — to always have their back, to always be in their corner, and to always love them unconditionally,” she told Insider. “So it makes me really sad for his daughter that, already, she’s being pressured to comply with something that her father is forcing on her for political reasons. It’s just disgusting.”
The rally, which was also attended by Rep. Lee Zeldin, also a Republican gubernatorial candidate, was organized by the Long Island Loud Majority, which the Southern Poverty Law Center called “extreme anti-government,” the Daily Beast wrote. .
