Developer Unknown Worlds has all but confirmed that a new Subnautica game is in development. The aquatic survival game launched in 2014 and received a sequel in 2021 with Subnautica: Below Zero. Now it looks like the series will get a third installment, or at least a spin-off, based on a job posting for a senior narrative designer on the Unknown Worlds website.
“Unknown Worlds is looking for a Senior Narrative Designer to join the team working on the next game in the Subnautica universe,” reads the job description. “This person will work closely with the team to tell compelling and dramatic stories within the context of the game experience, while defining the history and lore of a new sci-fi world and its alien inhabitants. This individual has a unique opportunity to join the team early in development and help establish the narrative direction of a beloved franchise.”
The wording of the job description is rather interesting due to the use of the term “Subnautica universe”. This suggests that while the game is connected to Subnautica, it may not be a direct sequel, or perhaps even of the same genre. Additionally, “setting the story and lore of a new sci-fi world and its alien inhabitants” means that the game will be based on an entirely new planet, with its own native species and environments.
No official statement has been made by the developer about this game – the only evidence that development has started is this job listing. Since Unknown Worlds is still hiring resources for the project, you can bet it’ll be a while before we get any official word on that.
Earlier this year, Subnautica: Under Zero writer Brittney M. Morris left Unknown Worlds to join Insomniac Games and work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Morris already had experience with the Spider-Man lore since she had written Miles Morales’ prequel novel, Wings of Fury. The novel revolves around Vulture’s daughter, Starling, a new vulture in the making. It also explores Miles’ grief over the loss of his father, and also adapts to the world with new powers and responsibilities.
