There’s a new leak circulating, hailing from 4chan, which claims to outline Sony’s grand plan for their non-MCU Spider-Verse which was kicked off by Venom and recently expanded to Morbius. The current rights situation is literally that Sony has to make a movie about the Spider-Man universe every few years lest the rights go to Marvel, which they obviously don’t want, and the only way to stopping this is probably Disney directly buying Sony Pictures. I mean, never say never, but for now, we’re getting an increasingly weird series of Spider-Verse movies.
You can read the big leak here, but it’s a mix of previously announced known news and a bunch of actors and actresses Sony “wants” for various roles. It kind of reads like a “so hot right now” who’s who of the young actors, and if all those “dream” projects and castings come to life is anyone’s guess. But it comes to the same conclusion that has seemed obvious to most people for a while now, that Sony is trying to put together their own Spider-Man based universe with their own Sinister Six, to fight their own version of Spider-Man, anybody. it can be an existing one or a new one.
Here is the film and cast breakdown:
Kraven the hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola. All these castings have been confirmed.
Mrs. Webb with Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney (confirmed). Vera Farmiga is said to be in final talks for Cassandra Webb. Sony “wants” Jena Ortega and Scott Eastwood.
Venom 3 will have Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams back (confirmed) under the direction of Andy Serkis. Toxin becomes a new vigilante ally who joins Venom in hunting Xenophage.
spider woman directed by Olivia Wilde (confirmed). Sony wants Ana de Armas to portray Jessica Drew and Rebecca Ferguson to play the villain.
silver marten where Sony wants Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer to star.
night watch where Sony wants Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page as the star.
The grand plan is a Six Claims Avengers-style crossover that will at least feature Venom, Vulture, Morbius, and some of those others to battle Spider-Man. They want Spider-Man to be Holland’s Spider-Man, but it’s unclear if they’ll work that out with Disney and Marvel. The leak says they approached Andrew Garfield about reprising his former role as Peter Parker, but he said no (given his recent hugely high-profile and successful film projects, this lead), and they might ” retire” and launch a new Spider-Man in his same universe for it. Yeah, a little confusing.
So is it plausible? I mean, half of that is confirmed, and the other half is mostly “Sony wants high-profile stars to direct their other random Spider-Verse character movies.” If Sony has already publicly committed to the Kraven and Madame Webb films, things like Silver Sable and Nightwatch certainly seem at least believable.
The thing is, Sony is only three movies away from that experience. Both Venoms were a hit, at least with audiences. Morbius was beaten by critics but embraced at least as a meme by fans. It made $148 million worldwide, which is a far cry from Venom’s numbers. It’s hard to know what something like a Kraven the Hunter movie is going to do, and I’d say Aaron Taylor-Johnson is kind of a mistake if Sony is chasing popular stars for these films. Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney for Madame Webb is another story.
Who knows how it will turn out. Obviously, Sony will never reach the heights of the MCU with these films, but will they ever make a truly beloved reviewer? That remains to be seen, but pleasing the audience remains the most important thing.
