2CP may not be dead in Overwatch 2 after all

I have a confession to make: by reducing the Monitor 2 from the beta patch notes to something easier to read, I’ve cut some sections without fully absorbing details about widely known things. We all knew 2CP was going to disappear in Quick Play and Competitive, for example. But, it turns out there was some intriguing information about the fate of 2CP cards in Monitor 2 in the patch notes.

2CP (or Assault, if you fancy) is removed in favor of the new game mode, Push. But, as noted Dexertothey will not forever be relegated to the dustbin of history.

“Although Assault Maps will no longer be in standard rotations, all Assault Maps (Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya, Paris, and Horizon Lunar Colony) will still be available for use in Custom Games and the ‘workshop’, the patch notes read. “We’ll also be looking for future opportunities to bring them back into fast-paced, competitive map rotations, as well as special events and arcade game modes.”

It’s interesting! It was previously understood that 2CP cards would still be present in the Workshop and Custom Games, but the possibility of them even reappearing in Quick Play and Competitive was not publicly announced as a possibility until now.

Overall, 2CP cards were the most hated among the playerbase. They could often lead to long matches, while Paris and Horizon Lunar Colony weren’t the most enjoyable to play in general. There was also huge potential for snowballing and blowouts in 2CP.

Blizzard knew there were issues with 2CP maps and tried various things over the years to fix them, like making major changes to Horizon in 2018 and even toying with the idea of changing the 2CP ruleset. .

However, none of these worked. Horizon and Paris have been removed from Surveillance competitive card pool in 2020, then Quick Play last month.

I’m glad that Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries and Hanamura in particular still have a place in Monitor 2. I’m a big fan of Hanamura in particular. Maybe some of the cards will also be recycled for some PVE missions.

Meanwhile, those who entered the Monitor 2 beta are discovering the Push, New Queen Street (Toronto) and Colisseo (Rome) cards for themselves right now. If you don’t have access to the beta yet, don’t worry. You still have a chance to enter. The Overwatch League will be giving away thousands of beta keys next weekend. Check out all the details here:
